Producing Invasive Plant Resource Boxes for Outreach in the West
P.I.: Mary McFadzen, Montana

Funding for production and distribution of 100 science-based resource boxes to support the invasive plant educational and outreach efforts of land managers and resource specialists in the West.

2004 Onion Iris Yellow Spot Virus - Emerging IPM Issue
P.I.: Howard Schwartz, Colorado

Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV) and its thrips vector are serious threats to sustainable and profitable onion production in the western United States. This grant provided funding for field research and data generation to support future grant activities and to support IR-4 and EPA labeling for novel reduced risk biopesticides that showed promise in an earlier study in Colorado.

Travel Support to IR-4 Food Use Workshop
P.I.: Rebecca Sisco, California

This grant provided funding for four people to attend the IR-4 Food Use Workshop in Orlando, Florida. Because of their roles in the IR-4 network, their knowledge was crucial to reach appropriate stakeholder-driven decisions at the workshop.

Travel Support to Present Poster on Protection of Threatened and Endangered Species
P.I.: Allen White, Texas

This grant supported attendance and presentation of a poster at the International Conference on Pesticide Application for Drift Management, held in Hawaii. The poster was intended to inform the pesticide community and government agencies of a recent document by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service providing recommendations for pesticide applications that involve endangered species, migratory birds, and national wildlife refuges.

2005 Special Projects

Support for Mosquito Control Seminar
P.I.: Robert Hayes, Idaho

This funding supported a "technician-based" mosquito abatement training workshop in Nampa, Idaho, presented by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture in cooperation and collaboration with local officials and regional mosquito control association members. The funds helped defray the costs of facility, materials, and speaker expenses, and helped promote IPM decision making processes.

Distribution of the Montana State University Museum IPM Starter Kit in Montana and Wyoming
P.I.: Will Lanier, Montana

Support for distribution and evaluation of a Museum Starter Kit to help museum staff and volunteers select and integrate pest control strategies into their museum operation. The kit contains insect identification aids, monitoring tools, a 15-minute video summarizing general museum IPM concepts, and instructions on how to access Montana State University diagnostic services.

New Emerging Pest in the Pacific Northwest - Potato Tuber Moth: Biology and Biological Options for Management
P.I.: Silvia Rondon, Oregon

Support for research to 1) determine potato tuber moth overwintering stages, locations, and lengths and to determine hosts used for oviposition, overwintering, and feeding; 2) assess potato tuber moth parasitoids and predators; and 3) communicate with industry extensively about this pest.

Promoting Green Manure Control of Cyst Nematodes in Sugar Beets
P.I.: Dennis Searle, Idaho

Support for promotion of green manure control of cyst nematodes in sugar beets. 90 acres of green manure were planted in Idaho and Oregon, and growers attended field days to learn how the crop is planted, managed, and incorporated.

2006 Special Projects

Arizona Cotton Production Pesticide Use
P.I.: Paul Baker, Arizona

Support to obtain, prepare, and distribute the 2004 Arizona cotton production pesticide use data. Pesticide use data is an essential component in tracking IPM practices, strategies, and research.

Promoting Green Manure Control of Cyst Nematodes in Sugar Beets
P.I.: Dennis Searle, Idaho

Support for continued promotion of green manure control of cyst nematodes in sugar beets. 90 acres of green manure were planted in different growing areas, but this time growers were brought individually to the green manure fields and shown the process.
